Boarding Houses

Boarding at Box Hill School provides a welcoming and warm ‘home from home’ experience for all our students, placing positive outcomes at the core and ensuring that the happiness and welfare of each individual is paramount. We offer boarding on a full, weekly or flexi basis to suit the varying needs of students and their families. Please click here for more information on Weekly Boarding.

There are more than 160 boarders at Box Hill School, of which the majority are full boarders, ensuring there is always a vibrant and busy atmosphere across all age groups at evenings and weekends.

We ensure an appropriate level of privacy is maintained and create an atmosphere of tolerance and respect. Our supportive and well-disciplined environment provides the best conditions for learning during homework time in the evenings. Our aim is to enable each pupil to develop, learn and take responsibility for themselves and for others and to respect their environment. Sixth Form boarding students are offered a boarding experience that prepares them for the greater independence they will have beyond school. We give each pupil the opportunity to develop qualities of leadership and team working.

Our beautiful grounds, extensive boarders activities programme, new sports centre and extensive sports fields give boarders ample room to exercise or relax outside teaching time.

All boarding houses at Box Hill School have residential members of staff, ensuring the highest possible care and supervision of pupils. All of our boarding houses include a kitchen area, satellite TV and Wi-Fi access. Boarding life is currently structured around six main houses, with pupils placed according to age and gender.

ATWOOD HOUSE

Built in 2005, Atwood House is named after Box Hill School’s second headmaster, Dr Rodney Atwood. It is a purpose built two-storey house for senior boarders, accommodating 20 Y13 students, with five twin bedrooms and en-suite facilities on each floor. Atwood House has recently benefitted from a brand new common room, which is a spectacular social space with great new facilities for our boarders.

BURMESTER HOUSE

This Grade II listed 18th century house is used as a boarding house for 24 senior students. Many of the rooms have recently been refurbished, and the students benefit from a large garden, which is used during the summer months for studying, socialising and relaxing.

CONSTANTINE HOUSE

Constantine was the first purpose built boarding house at Box Hill School. It has recently been extended to provide additional accommodation. This is a boarding house home to approximately 31 junior boarders.

DALEWOOD HOUSE

Dalewood is the school’s main building, and provides a home from home for 22 junior boarders. The House underwent extensive refurbishment during 2012, resulting in beautifully decorated and comfortable rooms with personal study facilities.

OLD COTTAGE

Old Cottage is a Grade II listed house, with parts dating back to the early 17th century. This senior boarding house accommodates 32 full and weekly boarders from Years 12 and 13. Most are twin rooms, although there are a number of single rooms for the more senior students. Old Cottage also has a well-maintained garden, which is a popular place to relax and study in the summer.

RALPH HOUSE

Ralph House accommodates 35 boarders for senior students. The House has undergone extensive refurbishment in recent years, and has a garden in the quad area used for study, BBQs and relaxing during good weather.
