Model United Nations (MUN)

The World of Model United Nations (MUN) at Box Hill School

Model United Nations at our school is more than just a co-curricular activity—it’s an opportunity for students to develop crucial life skills, become global citizens, and make a lasting impact. By participating in MUN, students will contribute positively to tackle the challenges of the future.

MUN embodies the true spirit of our IDEALS: Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership and Service.

What is MUN?

MUN is a student-led simulation of the United Nations, the international organisation responsible for addressing global issues and fostering diplomacy among nations. Students take on the roles of delegates representing various countries and work together to tackle complex global challenges. Students engage in research, public speaking, negotiation, and consensus-building while learning about international relations and global affairs.

Student voice is at the heart of Box Hill School, and this was showcased as our students participated in the prestigious London Youth Model United Nations (LYMUN) 2025 conference. Held at esteemed venues including the London School of Economics, Shaftesbury Theatre, and St Paul’s Cathedral, the event provided a remarkable platform for young minds to engage in diplomacy and develop international relations skills.

We are delighted to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our students:

  • Rachel H-W (Year 12) won the Diplomacy Award in the COPOUS committee, demonstrating exceptional contributions to discussions on space governance. Reflecting on the experience, she shared, “It was mine and many of my friends’ first MUN conference. I’m proud of us as a school community and look forward to more experiences like this!”
  • Emily W (Year 11) received the Best Research Delegate award for her thorough preparation and insightful contributions.
  • Flo D and Sarima B-O showcased exemplary leadership as assistant chairs, playing a key role in the event’s success.

This experience highlights the power of student engagement at Box Hill School, reinforcing our commitment to fostering global citizens and future leaders. We look forward to more successes as our students continue to make an impact on the world stage.

Our young delegates tackled a range of pressing topics, including.

–  Funding development programmes for clean drinking water to combat cholera
–  Regulation and disarmament in the Middle East during times of high regional tension
–  Improving access to education for refugees
–  Discussing issues and solutions around gender-based violence faced by displaced women during ongoing crises
–  Regulating the peaceful uses of outer space

the conference provided an enriching experience for all participants, especially our Year 10 and 11 students who attended their first Model UN event. Their dedication and poise were truly commendable. We are immensely proud to announce that three of our students received awards for best delegate:

  1. Josie H (Year 11)
  2. Daniel K (Year 10)
  3. Ekaterina C (Year 12)

These outstanding individuals demonstrated exceptional debating skills, diplomacy, and commitment to their respective committees. Moreover, we would like to express our gratitude to the three students who participated as assistant chairs during the conference. This role offered them valuable experience and skills that will undoubtedly benefit them in their future endeavours. In addition, four of our students had the unique opportunity to participate in special committees, such as the House of Commons, where they acted as individual members within the House of Commons. One student even took part in a crisis committee, where they had to compete against other students to run an army in order to win the Falklands War.

The Box Hill School Model United Nations team has once again proven their dedication, intelligence, and passion for global issues. We look forward to seeing their continued growth and success in future conferences.
